To blog or not to blog

7

More often than not, I come across a story, application, tip or trick that I want to blog about. What often stops me is the question I ask myself – “What is the actual topic of this blog, Jason?” My domain is actually my name and surname, but does this limit me in what I write about?

There are many bloggers out there that own their name as a domain, but what they have done is take their blog and associate it to a topic like web design, apple news, marketing or actually use it as an online journal. I haven’t done either. I’ve half specified that this blog is about “web, marketing and everything & anything”, but really that only means that anything goes.

So what does one do when faced with this dilemma? Start another blog about a specific topic? Redesign your blog to reflect your new interest? I’m really not sure…

Maybe seperate your blog into categories from the get go. So when someone visits your homepage, ask them which category do they want to read. That might work, but what do you do to your latest post, that you really want everyone to read? publish it to all categories? Mmm, scrap this idea.

I think the best for me would to be alittle more specific about exactly what I intend to blog about, and not sit on the fence and write a little here, and a little there. Get more indepth and write fresh content about that topic. Ok Jason, this is all very well, but what topic are you going to write about? For the moment, I’m not 100% sure. What I can tell you is that the next couple of posts might point you and me in the right direction… :-)

    Hey Jason,

I faced the exact same dilemma with my ex-personal blog (Me, My Coke & I), it started out as a personal blog, but then i realized i like to blog about gadgets, tech and whatever comes in my mind.

Lately i’ve changed the whole motto and attitude, and today the blog is growing pretty well with the new motto.

“Daily tidbits of tech, gadgets and pretty much anything to interest the average mind”.

Don’t be afraid to go against the “book of blog rules”, talking from exprience ;)

    Keep it up,
    A.H

    Thanks for the advice.

I’ve thought about a redesign to coinside with a change in writing. So lets see. :-)

Hmmm, your design was one of the first things that caught my eye, it’s very very nice one, but if you designed it yourself, then i should wait for better :P

Yeah, i did design it myself… But you wont have to worry, if I do redesign, it will take a while.

Maybe redesign to coincide with CSSreboot…. Now thats a good idea.

You spot on the question I have been asking myself. A.H. is completely right though. Blogging started as an escape from the rules governing websites, there shouldn’t be any “book of blog rules”. I find my readers enjoy the variety of articles I write. Great site BTW.

Have your say...
