An Adventure…

because that’s what the last 8 days have been! On Thursday last week around 12:45pm, we received a call from head office that we had a “I.T. crisis” and that we needed to fly up to Namibia ASAP. Talk about short notice. 90 minutes later the three of us were at Cape Town International boarding a plane to Windhoek.

Having never visited Namibia before, Gary and I were quite surprised at how green the place was. Apparently it had been raining for the past 3 weeks, which is something Cape Town desperately needs. After we were picked up from the airport and were informed about the “crisis” we did what typical okes do… plan tomorrow over a couple of beers and a braai. :-)

The first 2 days weren’t too rough on us, as we were still coping with the little sleep we were getting. But by Monday, we were pretty nackered. We left work early to get some shut eye before “the night shift” started. These night shifts consisted mostly of developing, debugging, doing research and of couse, listening to Robbie Williams – Live at Knebworth DVD. (That “Me and my monkey song” rocks!).

Couple of interesting flimda’s on the trip.
Ate game(buck, zebra etc) at our companies new restuarant, Iitumba.
Saw an internet cafe that claimed to be the biggest in Africa. (A whole 12 PC’s. I DON’T think so.)
Made friends with the all the graveyard-shift security guards.
Ate out at the world famous Joes Beerhouse in Windhoek. If its not world famous, then I have just officially announced that it is now. :-)
Had my initiation ceremony, whereby I had to tell a joke and dance for the entire company. 200+ staff.
Had my first performance appraisal, which went very well. :-)

The first floor boardroom became our home, and the coffee shop downstairs, supplied us with all the caffeine and toasted sandwiches 3 developers could consume in a day. The trip was an amazing experience. We worked hard and long hours, but what I can say is, it was worth all the effort.

[...] Anyway, back to the topic of this post – Upgrading Microsoft Access to Microsoft SQL 2005. I had this challenge while on my adventure recently. We had to convert 4 Access DB’s to MSSQL 2005 because we needed the data in order to compare with other 2005 DBs. We tried using linked servers across network domains, but that can really be a pain because of user rights, and really, no commercial application should be written in Access. [...]
