Lets fix Muti
24 July 2008 Social Media, South Africa
I love muti and “most” of the community on it, but today things are out of control. Imod.co.za being down has close to 20 votes and is the most popular story? Who cares! So, instead of bitching and moaning, here are my tips on how to fix and improve muti.
- Fix the registrations. It’s way to easy to register 6 accounts and vote your story to the top.
- Allow users to see who voted for a story.
- Increase the awareness of a person’s muti profile. Allow for avatars, more info about the user etc. Increased awareness of users, thus weeding out the trolls.
- Report a post as spam, inaccurate or not useful. Enough of these “votes” and the post either goes into moderation, or gets removed.
We obviously don’t want to turn into a Digg clone, but there are some elements that we can definitely borrow to make muti a more interesting and positive social voting site.
I have to run and will probably update this list later, but what are your thoughts?

I suggest that we stop calling it “down voting” & call it “spam reporting”.
In that case, if you wish to report a post as spam, you need to answer some questions like:
“Do you feel that this is against our _Post Policy_?” (link to policy)
“Is this post trying to directly gain a profit?” (ie. is it an advert?)
If enough people feel that the original post violates an AGREED policy, then the post should be removed.
Perhaps there should be a community agreement on what that policy is?
@DaveDuarte - can we not HuddleMind Muti’s policy?

@Jbagley big Kudos to you for taking the lead on this. There is nothing greater than involvement from “the community”. Criticism is great, but its hard to fix when there are no(few) novel suggestions, hopefully there will be some great ones coming out of this.

These are some good points Jason!
I think most importantly muti should fix the registration. At least a valid email-address and a activation is necessary for new users.
It should be visible who voted but also who down-voted a entry.
Cheers,
Nils

I agree, I just looked at muti and see that the fact that iMod being down has taken the top 2 voted positions! Freaking crazy, let’s get that down voting on again and remove the fluff.
I support your initiative Jason!

Those are all good points, but I disagree with your third one. Profile pics and user blurbs WILL turn it into a Digg clone. I haven’t used Digg in months because it’s so bloated. I used to love it, but I frankly stick to Reddit these days.
A spam-reporting option is a good idea. PLEASE don’t bring back the downvotes, though. I’m sure there’s only a couple of guys misusing Muti. Ban their IPs. And advertise.

Guys, thanks for your suggestions and JBagely thanks again for initiating this.
It looks like there are at least 3 separate things to be fixed, they are 1) Expansion of User Profile, 2) Registration Confirmations and 3) Downvoting/Moderation/Spam reporting
We are going to treat each seperately starting with number (3).
Please see the proposal up on Muti now. JBagley I wanted to post a copy of the proposal here too, but its in Markdown format and I fear I may screw up the formatting. Can I send it to you?
Regards
