    Video editing software for Mac

    16 November 2008  Technology

I’m looking for a slightly more advanced video editor for Mac. After K-Day on Saturday, I have some decent footage of some people getting really hot under the collar because of umbrella’s not being taken down and with the booze flowing on a hot summers day, these confrontations are pretty funny!

So I want to edit the clips I have, add some text, pointing arrows, a couple of spotlight effects etc and iMovie on my Mac doesn’t seem to cut it. It’s great for basic editing, but for something I would think was simple - like adding an arrow pointing to someone, or positioning text, iMovie really looks lightweight.

I like the ease of use that iMovie offers, but need something with a little more flexibility.

    Any suggestions?

Hi - There are numerous free editing tools for video on the Mac.

    1) Hyperengine-Av
    Trackless editing for your Mac

    2) T@B ZS4
T2B ZS4 is a free video editing and compositing tool from Zwei-Stein. Its not for everyone, but it could be for you.

    3) Jahshaka
Jahshaka is a free multi-use offline editing tool. Although it is still fairly new on the market.

    4) Avidemux
One of the more stable and complete free tools available.

    5) Blender
Blender is a powerful, multi-use editing/compositing and modeling tool. It’s one of the best on the market and it’s free.

I have a web site which has a complete list of these tools as well as tutorials, articles and links to download trial versions of commercial software

    It’s at http://www.free-video-editing.com/fve

Scroll down the page and find the link that says ‘Mac users should check out the Mac software links.’

While you’re there you might want to check out some of the articles about taking good video, making video look like film and - if you sign up to the newsletter - you’ll get a free ebook “10 Tips for Good Quality Home Video”

    Hope this helps

Jason, I use iMovie to produce what I have up at videos.jayz.co.za - but you’re right, iMovie does lack a bit. I’m heading to buy Final Cut Express soon - it’s an Apple product, and costs just over R1000 - the bigger version - Final Cut - has enormous price tag.

Freevideoman’s comment has urged me to look at Blender though, so I’ll see how it performs.
