Just a quick update to let everyone know that we hav packed up our house in Somerset West and are now living in Cape Town!

We have moved to a 2 bedroom place up in High Cape, which overlooks the CBD. We still have a few boxes to unpack, still don’t have proper DStv and I’m waiting patiently for Telkom to install a telephone and ADSL. So no HD sport or ADSL. I’m getting serious withdrawal symptoms.

Once we have settled in, I’ll take a few pics of the place as well as the amazing view and post them here.

I signed up for Project52 this morning. Basically, its a group of bloggers that are going to try and blog once a week for an entire year. From the website:

Project52 is a personal challenge geared toward getting fresh content on your website. The goal is to write at least 1 new article per week for 1 year. Because we all know what it‘s like to procrastinate on our content. A website is not just a fresh design that can be uploaded to the web and forgotten about!

I’m struggling to write a post a month these days, but I can definitely give this a go!

One of Beanbag Media’s new clients, Creative Cape Town, have been running a Facebook group for a couple of months. The group managed to rally just over 600 members in the couple of months it has been up and running. After a quick strat meeting the other day, I suggested to CCT that they move over to a Facebook page as it offers more flexibility and updates to the page are pulled into it’s fans stream so they can more easily interact and see what’s happening within Creative Cape Town.

2 weeks after migrating, the Creative Cape Town Facebook fan page has over 1200 members and the interaction on the page has been way better than the group ever saw.

Facebook groups are dead. Create a fan page. End of story.

I’m also able to use the QuickPress feature of the dashboard as well as the Press This bookmarklet. For now, I have to set my default posting category to Asides as QuickPress doesn’t allow you to select a category. (Coming in WP 2.8)

After reading this post on Mashable about how to deal with Social Media conflict, I thought I’d share some of my experiences of with the launch of the Incredible Connection blog.

1: Don’t take it personally

The first thing I’ve definitely learnt is not to take any of it personally. Sure, people often are responding directly to something you blogged about or tweeted, but its more about the subject matter they are upset about or responding negatively about. People have called me some pretty nasty things since launching the blog, but I know that if they ever had to meet me or enter into a civil discussion about the issues, their opinion about me personally would change.

2: Think before responding

Take the time to assess what the person is commenting, blogging or tweeting about before replying. Sometimes a knee-jerk reaction to a situation only adds more fuel to the fire. More often than not you will find people responding on your behalf or trying to explain the situation before you need to step in, so hold back a while if the situation allows for it.

3: Stay positive

When you do respond, always thank the person for taking the time to respond. Once thanked, it becomes easier to formulate a response that is appropriate to the situation. The Mashable article talks about finding something to agree with and this is also a great way to find middle ground with the commenter. I’ve found that in these situations, staying positive and responding directly via email to a person goes a long way than just shutting down any false or negative comments.

I don’t know about you, but I really enjoy watching the Olympics. Seeing the top athletes in the world compete for the greatest prize in sport – an Olympic Gold Medal, is awesome. Also, being South African, I love watching our fellow sportsmen and women kick ass against the world’s super powers in sport – USA, Australia Russia and others.

The 2008 Olympics will run from the 8th to the 24th of August in Beijing, China. The main Olympics stadium is known as The Bird’s Nest and is truly magnificent!

Having a look at the 2004 Olympics held in Athens, Greece, here were the top 5 countries:

United States (36 / 39 / 28 = 103)

Russia (27 / 27 / 38 = 92)

China (32 / 17 / 14 = 63)

Australia (17 / 16 / 16 = 49)

Germany (13 / 16 / 20 = 49)

South Africa (1 / 3 / 2 = 6) ended 35th. But with only 1 gold, it was a pretty disappointing performance by our team. Having a look at our world class swimming team that are traveling to the 2008 Olympics, I’m sure we will see a few more gold medals. The swimming starts on the 9th of August and ends on the 17th.

Here is a pic of the medals that will be presented in Beijing:

Also, with all Olympics, there has to be mascots. The 2008 Olympics has the Fuwa – which means good-luck dolls as their official mascot. Their names are Bèibei, Jīngjing, Huānhuan, Yíngying and Nīni.

Go check out the Wikipedia article on the 2008 Beijing Olympics or visit the official site.

I am totally gutted after last nights Champions League Final. I’m heartbroken and really struggling to even muster a smile today thats how painful that loss is.

The game was a great showpiece of how the English Premier League has improved over the past 2 seasons and is by far the best league in Europe at the moment. Did Manchester deserve to win? Probably, but if Chelsea had taken it, I think we could easily have said the exact same thing. For any cup final to be won or lost on the luck of penalties is really awful. Especially if you consider the one player that by far wanted to win that game more than any one else – John Terry.

What was even worse is that my Fiance, who is a huge football and John Terry fan, plane flight from Namibia was delayed by 2 hours and she missed the entire game. She landed just as the penalties started and I gave her running commentary – she is just as heartbroken.

There were moments of controversy, moments of glory and moments of tears, but all in all, it was a fantastic display of football, for Chelsea supporters, Man U supporters and even the neutrals.

The boys did us proud out there. Terry, Lampard, Ballack, Makelele, Essien, Joe and Ashley Cole get special mention for their big effort I felt they put in last night. They gave everything for the cause but the footballing gods just weren’t on our side last night.

Me? I’ll get over the loss (eventually). I won’t forget the pain and the way we lost the game, but I will be here next season shouting Chelsea! Chelsea! Chelsea!

Keep the blue flag flying high!
