HTML Statistics

Everyone loves statistics, especially us web designers. From checking your traffic stats 5 times a day to Technorati this or that, everyone likes to compare stats.

So a couple of okes did a web study on sites that validated, which type of HTML tags were most common or how many different ID tags were used. These studies were based on less than 1000 websites or pages. So the results are more interesting than conclusive. December 2005 roles around and in steps Big Daddy and did “an analysis of a sample of slightly over a billion documents”. Woah… Read More »

Randomness and updates

Just some interesting flimda’s that are going on around the globe of late.

1. Everyone knows this already, but Tsotsi won an Oscar for best foreign film on Sunday night. That’s South Africa’s second oscar!

2. For those of you that read like reading the news on the net, why not try out Newsvine. Newsvine is a place where everyone can read, write and influence the news. I have my own column there at blogs.newsvine.com.

3. For all those people that might be interested in signing up at Dreamhost, check out Dreamhost codes.

4. Lonelyfinger.com has come out of the closet, and low and behold, it was 5FM. What was a really mysterious build-up and alot of hype generated, turned out to be a dud. C’mon 5FM, get a life.

5. For those of you interested in stats programs for your websites and blogs, do yourself a favour and check out www.crazyegg.com and www.mapsurface.com

That should keep you all busy for a while. ;-)

For all of you interested, I’ve signed up for the Spring edition of CSS Reboot.

The CSS Reboot is a community event for web professionals. May 1st, 2006 at 6:00 GMT Rebooters from all over the world will launch their web standards-based redesigns simultaneously, bringing traffic, interest and a little respect to their sites. There are no prizes or arbitrary winners, just great exposure and the knowledge that we all participated in something great.

Well no blockquote styling as you can see, and thats just 1 in a long list of things I want to change around here. :-) You can go and visit my reboot page to checkup on where I am with the redesign. I will be posting the progress in the comments over there.

62 days until the 1st of May reboot. No procrastinating over here, pal. ;-)

We all love to hate Microsoft don’t we? :-) If there is something that [tag]Microsoft[/tag] have got spot on is [tag]Microsoft SQL Server 2005[/tag]. In my opinion there is no better Database engine. So you can take Oracle and its ridiculous price tag and click uninstall, because MSSQL 2005 is here to stay.

Anyway, back to the topic of this post – [tag]Upgrading[/tag] [tag]Microsoft Access[/tag] to Microsoft SQL 2005. I had this challenge while on my adventure recently. We had to convert 4 Access DB’s to MSSQL 2005 because we needed the data in order to compare with other 2005 DBs. We tried using linked servers across network domains, but that can really be a pain because of user rights, and really, no commercial application should be written in Access. Read More »

An Adventure…

because that’s what the last 8 days have been! On Thursday last week around 12:45pm, we received a call from head office that we had a “I.T. crisis” and that we needed to fly up to Namibia ASAP. Talk about short notice. 90 minutes later the three of us were at Cape Town International boarding a plane to Windhoek. Read More »
